Air Advisor Memorial Fund

1 January 2012

Ladies and Gentlemen,

My name is Col Olaf Holm and I am President of the USAF Air Advisor Academy fund here at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (JB MDL), New Jersey.  USAF Airman travel to JB MDL from bases all around the world to earn their qualification as an Air Advisor at the Academy prior to deploying to places such as Afghanistan and Iraq.  During their month at the academy, we teach the students Combat Skills, Language/Regio and Culture knowledge and Air Advisor Core Knowledge.

While here, our students make South Central New Jersey home, by eating at local restaurants, visiting the local attractions and social venues while building lifelong friendships with their classmates.  These friendships are critical, as these classmates soon become battle buddies because they deploy overseas shortly after graduation.  As Air Advisors, these Airmen work and live closely with our partner nations’ personnel to develop their own aviation resources.  This is an extremely important and at times dangerous mission with the ultimate design to make our partner nation strong enough to defend themselves against an insurgency and thereby allow the United States to bring our own troops home.

On 27 April of this year, an Afghan Air Force Lieutenant Colonel walked into an office at the Kabul International Airport and opened fire with his 9MM pistol killing eight USAF Air Advisors and one retired US Army Lt Col Contractor; the gunman was also killed.  No one is exactly sure why the Afghan Air Force Lt Colonel turned his gun on the Americans, but it is obvious he was motivated by the Taliban.

These were friends and colleagues of mine and if for only a short time, they were also members of the Central New Jersey and Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Community.  Current and former Air Advisors identify JB MDL as the home of the USAF Air Advisor.  Therefore, I am putting forth an effort to build a memorial in honor of our fallen Air Advisor comrades here at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, right next to the Air Advisor Academy. Please refer to our website for further information on the memorial at

I would like to build this memorial in the same way that we built our Air Advisors; having the local community involved to make it happen.  My son, Andrew, a junior at Northern Burlington High School, is organizing a fundraiser to assist with building of the memorial.  I am also seeking out support from local companies and organizations for the construction of this memorial.  The goal is to send out 90 day out invitations when the project is 90% complete, but we are very hopeful that we will dedicate the memorial this summer. Whatever the date, this project will get done to honor our fallen and their families.
